Phylogenetic patterns differ for native and exotic plant communities across a richness gradient in Northern California

چکیده
The assembly of local communities is the result of the tension between local, often negative, and possibly deterministic interactions, and larger-scale environmental or dispersal constraints or stochastic events (Berlow, 1997; Levine, 2000; Lovette & Hochachka, 2006). Larger-scale environmental conditions and dispersal limitation filter a larger pool of potential colonists into one that includes species with the appropriate suite of traits for arrival and persistence (Keddy, National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, University of California, 735 State St., Santa Barbara, CA 93101, USA, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Toronto, Scarborough, 1265 Military Trail, Scarborough, ON, Canada M1C 1A4, Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, University of Minnesota, 1987 Upper Buford Circle, St. Paul, MN 55108, USA, Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011, USA, Ecology, Behavior and Evolution, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309, USA

متن کاملMicrobes on mountainsides: Contrasting elevational patterns of bacterial and plant diversity
The study of elevational diversity gradients dates back to the foundation of biogeography. Although elevational patterns of plant and animal diversity have been studied for centuries, such patterns have not been reported for microorganisms and remain poorly understood. Here, in an effort to assess the generality of elevational diversity patterns, we examined soil bacterial and plant diversity a...
متن کاملBiotic and abiotic influences on native and exotic richness relationship across spatial scales: favourable environments for native species are highly invasible
1. Biological invasions threaten biodiversity, and understanding the factors that influence a community’s susceptibility to invasion informs both management of invasive species and conservation efforts towards promoting biodiversity. 2. In this study, we examined the native–exotic richness relationships (NERR) at two spatial scales and asked what variables mediate the relationship between nativ...

متن کاملAvian assemblages along a gradient of urbanization in a highly fragmented landscape
Our goal was to evaluate how avian assemblages varied along a gradient of urbanization in the highly fragmented landscape of coastal southern California. We measured species richness and abundance of birds within continuous blocks of habitat, within urban habitat fragments that varied in landscape and local habitat variables, and within the urban matrix at different distances from the wildland ...
